Pat Shepherd
I started painting in watercolour and even took a course to frame my own works. After an accident compromised my dominant hand, I was no longer able to frame, so I switched to acrylics. And rather than painting loose, large landscapes, I began to paint animals. They still fascinate me and seem to make people smile.
The eyes of animals really appeal to me, and I usually start there when I’m painting. If they don’t come “alive”, there’s no point in painting them.
I’ve been in shows at the Kent Farndale Gallery, the Ajax McLean Centre, Art on the Fringe, Art in the Park, Scugog Council for the Arts, the Whitby Station Gallery and the Oshawa Artist Association. I also show with the Port Perry Artists’ Association and Artists of Uxbridge.
Paintings should express your emotion. My goal is to create a mood that makes people feel. Whether it’s animals, landscapes or portraits, I hope there is an emotional reaction to what I’ve painted.
