Hildy H. Smith
Hildy H. Smith is a Canadian artist whose love of paint and colour has followed her for more than 30 years. Working in both oils and acrylics, she creates expressive landscapes filled with light, shadow, and a touch of drama. While landscapes are her first passion, she occasionally wanders into other subjects, and those pieces are always happily received.
Hildy has no formal art-school background, but her skill comes from something better: years of experience, learning from mentors, workshops, and plenty of time with a paintbrush in hand.
From the moment she was old enough to pick up a crayon, art was her favourite place to be. As a child, she treasured every new colouring book, spent hours drawing, and was the kid always decorating hallways and windows at school. A junior scholarship to Saturday workshops at Ryerson set her on a path that felt meant to be.

Life, of course, got busy. Family and work came first, and her art took a back seat for a while. Even while working full-time in finance and real estate, Hildy made room for creativity - taking workshops, painting at the cottage, showing her work in art shows, and eventually working with the North York Arts Council, where she later served on the board.
When Hildy and her family moved to Port Perry in 1989, she found herself missing Toronto’s art scene and put her brushes down again for a time. But Port Perry had something special waiting for her: the Port Perry Artists Association. Joining the group helped reignite her passion, surround her with talented peers, and provide the camaraderie, feedback and encouragement that every artist thrives on.
Today, Hildy paints out of a small studio in her home, piling up canvases that reflect decades of passion, curiosity, and growth. She still believes artists never stop learning. Every painting teaches something new. And her favourite reward? Knowing someone loves her work enough to hang it on their wall. That, she says, is the coolest feeling of all.
Hildy’s paintings can be found in private collections across Canada and Great Britain. And as long as there’s paint on her palette, the collection will keep growing. Even if her family wonders where they’ll store it all someday.
